Please mark your calendars for the 13th Annual Tucker Civic Association’s Rivers Alive volunteer waterway cleanup event, to be held on October 15. This will be at Twin Brothers Lake in Johns Homestead Park, which is in the South Fork Peachtree Creek Watershed.
The event will include invasive plant species removal, and trash pick-up on the land and in the water. Based on that, we will divide Scouts into four groups/activities:
- Group 1: Easier/should be reserved for youngest (and AOL) Scouts – Pull and bag Japanese Stiltgrass along the trails. No tools required. It pulls up very easily.
- Group 2: Cut English Ivy that has grown on trees and pull it off, then pull out of the ground. Pull additional ivy out of the ground around the trees.
- Group 3: More intense – Saw down small magnolia trees (team leader will then treat the cut trunks with glyphosate). Remove branches, and use the trunks to line the trails.
- Group 4: Pull invasive aquatic plants out of the beaver pond/creeks. Maximum of 3 scouts (will join larger group). Must bring their own waders, or plan to get your shoes wet.

All volunteers will need to pick one of the four groups above. Each group will have a max number of volunteer slots, and these will be first come first serve. Actual working time at the event should be around 2.5 hours.
Each participant must complete and bring the waiver. The waiver forms can be downloaded at [www.tuckercivic.org/waiver]. All participants under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.
Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt, have breakfast and receive pizza for lunch. If you have anything that you want to do/play during lunch, please feel free to bring it (ex. giant Jenga, frisbee, etc). As an added bonus, Scouts who participate earn service hours!
For your protection from poison ivy, ants, etc., please plan to wear closed-toed boots/shoes, long-sleeved shirts, hats and long pants. Never work alone; always have a buddy you. Be prepared for the environment with sunscreen and bug spray.
