Cloudland Canyon Campout

For August, our camping trip will be to Cloudland Canyon State Park in northwest Georgia.

When: Friday, August 16 – Sunday, August 18

This is a great place to escape the heat of Atlanta, with average August temps in the mid 70s. Many seasoned GA State Park campers call Cloudland their favorite.

The scenic vistas in the heart of the park are amazing. There’s a diversity of hiking difficulties, with easy walks along the eastern canyon rim, moderate hikes along the western rim, and the muscle burning decent down 600 stairs to Daniel Creek at the bottom of the canyon. Did you know…completing this hike and satisfy 1 of 4 objectives of the GA State Park [Canyon Climbers] award?

In addition to hiking, there are also mountain bike trails and backpacking opportunities. Before the trip, Scouts will need to decide where to put their energy.

The state park is located approximately 125 miles (2.5 hours) away from the Scout Hut. North on I-285, North on I-75, Exit 320 GA-136 toward Lafayette (west, left). GA-136 will take you the entire way to the entrance, but it will jog a few times near Lafayette. GPS should work fine but printing the directions from I-75 Exit 320 is a good idea.

We’re booked into Pioneer site #2, which provides for tent and some hammock camping, pit toilet, & water spigot. If there is enough adult leadership and interested Scouts, a subset of campers may go backpacking Saturday night.

A parking pass is required ($5) or Friends of GA State Park pass.

The sign-up form is available below, and the deadline to sign-up for the event will be August 5. We will plan meals and activities at the regular Troop meeting on August 6.
